This exhibition is structured around the series "NFT BUDDHA" and "YOKAIDO," which the artist has been developing in recent years. Both series start with NFT art character series and expand into a multiverse through various media, such as contemporary art works with physicality, 3D sculptures, video works, avatars, etc.

Takakura posits the Buddha statues and mythical creatures, which serve as motifs in each series, as a type of "character culture" constructed by Japan's unique "aesthetics of variation". At the same time, he defines Buddhas and mythical creatures, which "exist in belief but cannot be touched", as extremely close to "digital entities" in the present day.

From this perspective, when reviving Buddha statues and mythical creatures as artworks in modern times, Takakura uses NFT, a proof technology for digital data tied to the blockchain, as a means of producing works. By utilizing NFT, he aims to continuously archive his works in the virtual world, joining the lineage of successive reinterpretations of Buddha statues and mythical creatures.

In addition, not only the artworks, but also the virtual exhibition venue itself is created by the artist for this exhibition. In the midst of mountains reminiscent of the verdant Yamanashi Prefecture, a building that melds a Western museum with a Japanese temple appears on a lake, inviting you all into the world of virtual reality.

The "NFT BUDDHA" series is a collection of NFTs that significantly redesigns Japanese Buddhist statues into characters using Takakura's pixel art, while keeping their hand signs and possessions intact. In addition to familiar figures such as "Yakushi Nyorai" and "Ashura," the series characterizes all Buddhas transmitted to Japanese Buddhism, including "Gongen," a symbol of the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism, and "Seven Gods of Fortune." This is an ongoing project.

The NFT series, including "NFT BUDDHA," "YOKAIDO," and "BONNONE," are being developed under the common worldview of "BUDDHAVERSE."

In the second series "YOKAIDO," Takakura creates NFTs using Japanese monsters, or "yokai," as motifs. He reworks these characters into a contemporary form by referencing elements of yokai from Toriyama Sekien and Shigeru Mizuki, and also incorporating motifs from monsters appearing in games, special effects shows, and manga since the 1990s. He sees these yokai as "free beings that shoulder everything except the good," and is creating original, modern-specific yokai as well. This project is ongoing.

In the third series "BONNONE," Takakura has created characters using the concept of "Bonnō" (worldly desires or defilements) in Buddhism, based on the original work of Buddhist monk Zuikei Inada. Starting from the complex categorization of Bonnō, which is often perceived as negative, Takakura personifies these into characters that are more relatable to people. This project is ongoing.

In the "NFT BUDDHA" series, Takakura is also selling the series as 3D "avatars". The concept behind this is to return to the form of the "Buddhist statues", which are the motifs, through the form of avatars. This project is ongoing.

『Buddhist Images for Man and Machine』

The series "NFT BUDDHA" is a collection where Takakura had an AI read the characters from his NFT series and generate several similar images. These AI-generated images, together with the original images, were collaged and UV embossed printed on a 1m x 1m canvas. The aim of the series is to connect the markets of NFTs and contemporary art through the medium of "characters", in a way that their respective values influence each other.
